• 5.0 out of 5 stars from RoJo -- Best Narrator Ever! : I love reading and listening to Dickens' novels. I had listened to the Old Curiosity Shop not too long ago and enjoyed it but when I listened to it read by Anton Lesser, I loved it! The story is long and complicated as are all of Dickens' tales, that's why I like them. The characters are diverse and, well, characters! The ending is a bit on the sappy side but it doesn't take away from the rest of the story, I liked it anyway. For me, however, the best part is listening to Anton Lesser read. His is able to create such a wide variety of voices that I never was confused as to whom was speaking. That isn't the case with all narrators. Sometimes there is not enough variance between voices and it gets confusing, especially when there are numerous characters in a story. To me, the narrator makes or breaks a story if I'm going to listen to it. I can create any voice I want when I am reading but to listen to the wrong voice can make the most wonderful book annoying. I've learned to listen to the sample voice before I purchase any audiobook now. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2019 )

And I am not alone - there's a reason so many of his books are true, timeless classics. Add this one to the list. The principle thing his books drive home to me is how people really haven't changed over the 170 years or so since this book was written. But no one helps much. Some group on the Internet said it was Bleak House, but I think that is the least favorite of the five I've read in the past year. Every once in a while, I just need another Dickens fix, and this book didn't disappoint. If you're one of those people who was forced at gunpoint in school to read A Tale of Two Cities, please give Dickens another chance. You owe it to yourself. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Linda Taft -- ... deeply about the characters he creates that you should love, while loathing all those he has created that ... : Dickens has a genius for making you care deeply about the characters he creates that you should love, while loathing all those he has created that threaten harm to them. Along the way he allows you to look at and learn about the world these characters inhabited. It is an intriguing and enlightening experience. One of his devices is to take you into the life and mind of rather plain and ordinary people who are part of the plot line. Some are near saintly, others are ordinary people with ordinary flaws, and others are clearly beyond redemption. At the end of a tale about what are rather ordinary people you have had an extraordinary journey. I'm not objective about the story. It is personal. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from FictionFan -- The one with Little Nell… : Nell Trent, a child of thirteen, lives with her doting grandfather in his shop where he ekes out an existence selling old and unusual items. Grandfather (he is never named) has lost both his beloved wife and their daughter, Nell’s mother, and Nell has become a substitute to him for their loss, though he also loves her for her own sake. He is worried about what might happen to her when he dies, so is determined to make lots of money so he can provide for her. But the method he chooses – gambling – soon becomes an addiction, and he gradually loses all his savings and ends up in debt to the evil dwarf, Daniel Quilp. Quilp turns Nell and her grandfather out of their home, and they must leave London and learn to make their way in a life of poverty. Grandfather is old and becoming senile, so young Nell must take on any jobs she can find, and beg for them both when work isn’t available. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Michelle -- 3 stars : I read this book purely because Oscar Wilde once said, if you dont laugh over the death of Nell, you have a heart of stone. Which kind of gave a huge part of the story away but it's Oscar, we can get over it. I was really surprised to have the main character killed off to be honest, but i guess i should have known better as Dickens does love to bash his characters around. Like most classics, I found it pretty hard going, but not overly descriptive as they can be. One of the few Dickens I can actually say I half enjoyed. Althoough I knew a lot of the stories by Dickens from Radio and TV productions, I had never actually read any of his books. I found his decriptive passages verbose and his reported speach brilliant. But, since this book started out as a serialised work in a periodical, its length is not surprising but it will take a modern reader some time to adjust to the 19th Century style. Hence its flaws. : Although overall a good read, for me, The Old Curiosity Shop, is in my opinion, far from being one of Charles Dickens' best works. First of all it is at least semi-misnomerous; the title surely evokes for all, an emporium of almost worthless but oddly amusing interesting curios, with further appeal being added by the glorious hotch-potch arrangement and display of all these goodies: a chipped bust of Napoleon next to a commode, next to a plaster-cast of Boadicea, with her nose missing. Does this exist: OK, it does, minimally, so minimally that why the book was ever given this title is a mystery, and one which can presumably never be solved.
